TCU Horned Frogs open their 2026 season at home against North Carolina Tar Heels on August 29 before a blockbuster road trip to Lubbock on Thanksgiving.
Joey McGuire, the Texas Tech head coach, used Big 12 Media Days to send a clear message about TCU Horned Frogs. The Red Raiders won’t face TCU until November 27, but McGuire made sure the Horned Frogs heard his team’s ambitions. Despite roster turnover, McGuire stressed Texas Tech’s culture remains intact. “We feel like we’re in a really good spot culturally and team-wise,” he said.
Will Hammond will start for Texas Tech after recovering from ACL surgery. McGuire’s confidence in Hammond is absolute. “He would tell you he was our starting quarterback and wasn’t going to back away,” McGuire said. The team rallied around Hammond late last season. TCU Horned Frogs will face a confident signal-caller if he’s healthy by late November.
Texas Tech enters 2026 chasing another Big 12 title. McGuire’s comments show the Red Raiders aren’t rebuilding. They’re building on last year’s success. TCU Horned Frogs, the defending Big 12 champs, won’t underestimate that mindset. Both teams could still vie for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game or the College Football Playoff when they meet in Lubbock.
McGuire repeatedly pointed to leadership as Texas Tech’s foundation. Veteran captains Ben Roberts and Sheridan Wilson anchor the locker room. “Shared adversity brings you even closer,” McGuire said. The Horned Frogs must account for a Red Raiders squad that’s returning talent and refusing to step back.
